The conversation has shifted from “what if” to “what now” following Canada’s Finance Minister’s release of the Final Recommendations report back in August 2021, which paves the way for an operational open banking framework in Canada by January 2023. Around the world today, there are many first-to-market players including the UK, Singapore, and Australia who are already far ahead of Canada in the implementation of an open banking framework. - Due to C19, consumer use of Digital and Contactless payments is a trend that will last post Covid and even potential for QR based payments seem possible in North America since C19 - I hope that new regulation will come into place in many fronts including Digital ID, Consumer Data Rights and working towards Open Banking - C19 has changed the world in so many ways including the mass global debt which will take decades to repay as well as driven the largest boom in online shopping and digital payments which has pushed the threat of cyber attacks - I believe consumer are more savvy since C19 and are more open to using FinTech offerings and are gaining ground due to covid. We need new competition law in canada to drive additional offerings - I hope that FI's are focused partnering with FInTech and their digitalization - Open Banking is key to pushing for competition and consumer savings
